Edema Management Essentials (EME)--"When it's not Lymphedema" No prior Lymphedema certification is required! Course Description: This 2-day course is designed to provide essential knowledge and skills in edema management. Swelling doesn’t always mean lymphedema! Most commonly, edema etiologies include orthopedic, post-surgical and post-traumatic conditions, vascular disease, dependency and chronic pain. Persistent edema has been identified as the most important element contributing to scar tissue, adhesions, diminished Range of Motion (ROM), and pain. Current research validates that prompt reduction of edema dramatically enhances functional therapeutic outcomes and rehabilitation. This course will teach non-lymphedema certified therapists how to successfully treat a wide variety of chronic and sub-acute edemas in rehabilitation, hospital and long-term care settings. Locations and Dates: See KTC Course Schedule Course Objectives: Participants will be able to: Understand the basic anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic and venous systems Identify the etiology of various types of edema with and without wounds Understand the secondary effects of edema and their influence on orthopedic outcomes and tissue healing Understand the importance of restoring lymphatic function in the treatment of various types of edema Identify indications and contraindications for edema intervention Develop an understanding of the techniques most effective for edema control (e.g. Manual Lymph Drainage [MLD], bandaging and exercise) through hands on lab experience, and understand how to use these techniques in conjunction with traditional treatment modalities Identify signs and symptoms in patients who would benefit from a referral to a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT)
