Head and Neck Lymphedema Management Online Course
 
  
 
Course Description:
This 5-hour online course addresses the clinical management of patients with lymphedema of the head and neck following surgery and/or radiation therapy for cancer.  The content includes a lecture on the sequelae related to cancer treatment followed by a thorough discussion of the role of appropriate therapeutic post-operative and post-radiation intervention.  Compression therapy applications as well as techniques of Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) for patients with lymphedema of the head and neck are demonstrated in great detail.  Additional rehabilitation considerations, including therapy for trismus and shoulder dysfunction, are also covered.
 
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you will:
  • be able to identify surgical and radiation therapy effects that lead to secondary lymphedema of the head and neck.
  • understand the unique treatment challenges associated with patients with lymphedema of the head and neck.
  • be able to assess the need for compression therapy in patients with lymphedema of the head and neck and choose the appropriate compression application from a variety of recommendations.
  • be familiar with specialized MLD techniques for patients with lymphedema of the head and neck, inluding intra-oral therapy.
  • appreciate the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach in the diagnosis and management of patients with head and neck cancers and subsequent lymphedemea.
Course Materials and Access:
This course includes four weeks of access to the online lessons plus a course manual with PowerPoint presentation handouts. Once Klose Training receives your completed registration and payment for the course, a confirmation letter (including username and password) and course manual will be mailed to you within five business days.
 
Time Requirements to Complete this Online Course:
Five clock-hours of instruction are provided in video and slide format. You may progress through this course at your own pace and review all materials as many times as needed within your four-week online access time.

Prerequisites:
This course is offered to all: PT, PTA, OT, COTA, ATC, RN, NP, LPN, MT, and MD. Persons attending this Head and Neck Lymphedema Management Online Course must be graduates of a lymphedema training program of at least 100 continuous hours. Unless you are a graduate of Klose Training, a copy of the Certificate of Completion of your initial lymphedema training course/program must be included with the registration form.

Online Quiz:
After you finish the online content, you are encouraged to complete the online quiz. Completion of the quiz is mandatory if you wish to receive online continuing education hours/credit. You must answer 80% or more of the questions correctly to pass the quiz.
 
Certificate of Completion/Continuing Education Units (CEUs):
This course offers 6.75 hours of online continuing education (5 hours of video and slide presentations and 1.75 hours for the content review and completion of the quiz) for physical, occupational, and massage therapists. After successfully passing the quiz and returning the signed Learner Agreement to Klose Training, you will be mailed a Certificate of Completion verifying your online course hours. Online course hours are approved for Lymphology Association of North America (LANA) re-certification.
