Edema Management Essentials (EME) Course
No prior Lymphedema certification is required

See schedule for course dates

This three day intensive course is designed to provide essential knowledge and skills in edema management and wound care to practicing physical and occupational therapists. Furthermore, it includes a comprehensive introduction to the current management of lymphedema and the techniques of Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) and Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).

Current research validates that prompt reduction of edema will dramatically improve therapeutic outcomes. It shows that stagnant high protein edema fluid in the interstitium has been identified as the number one element contributing to the formation of scar tissue, adhesions and diminished ROM. The most effective treatment approach for edema control must include facilitation and decongestion of the lymphatic system. This three day course is designed for all therapists who desire to learn practical skills to effectively treat sub-acute and chronic edemas associated with surgery or trauma. In addition, specific applications of edema management for patients with chronic venous insufficiency and edematous wounds will be presented. This course includes theoretical instruction and lab experience including the principles of Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) and compression bandaging appropriate to the sub-acute orthopedic population.

EME is a comprehensive approach to successfully treat sub-acute edema and dependent stroke edema. It has been shown to actively facilitate wound healing of venous leg wounds and other edematous wounds.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the basic anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic and venous systems
  • Understand the importance of restoring lymphatic function in the treatment of post surgical and post traumatic (subacute) extremity edema
  • Be able to identify the etiology of various types of edema with and without wounds
  • Know the techniques needed to activate the lymphatic system
  • Understand the secondary effects of edema on orthopedic outcomes and tissue healing
  • Understand the pathophysiology of wound development in patients with chronic venous insufficiency
  • Be able to identify the primary wound onset theories and the effects of edema on the wound bed
  • Be able to identify indications and contra-indications for EME intervention
  • Develop an understanding of the techniques most effective for edema control (MLD and bandaging and exercise) through Lab experience

Basic & Advanced Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)
(Vodder Technique)

See schedule for course dates

This 6 day Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) certification course is based on the techniques developed by Dr. Emil Vodder, Ph.D. When skillfully applied, this therapeutic soft tissue mobilization dramatically enhances lymph formation and promotes drainage within the superficial and deep systems of the lymph vascular network. During this course, students will be instructed in the basic and advanced treatment sequences of MLD, the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system, as well as the conditions responsible for the development of edema. Each day will be divided into two sections, one theoretical and the second, hands-on application.  Indications for using MLD are:  lymphatic circulatory disturbances, primary and secondary lymphedema, edema from venous insufficiency, post-traumatic conditions e.g. sprains and strains, post-surgical edema, pre- and post plastic surgery, scleroderma, fibromyalgia, migraine and sinus headaches, general relaxation and detoxification of the skin and superficial fascia.

Course Objectives
Participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the anatomy and the relevant scientific terminology related to the lymphatic system.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the differentiation between the normal and diseased states of the lymphatic system (physiology and pathophysiology of the lymphatic system).
  • Demonstrate understanding of the indications and contraindications related to the use of MLD.
  • Competently perform the techniques of MLD for all body areas. Develop appropriate treatment strategies for indications such as pre- and post-surgical edema, post-traumatic edema, fibromyalgia, general detoxification and other conditions.
  • Competently perform MLD on clients after breast surgery for cancer (clients at risk to develop lymphedema)
  • Competently perform MLD on clients with mild, medically uncomplicated primary or secondary lymphedema.

Please note: This course will not prepare the participant for the Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) treatment of lymphedema. Students who are so motivated must take an additional certification training course and meet other requirements of enrollment.

Limb Volume Calculation Software
by Bioscience Research Institute
(Version 4.0)

This computer program (CD) allows you to easily and systematically calculate, track and document your patients progress. This software can be used with unilateral and bilateral lymphedema involvement. You choose segment length, e.g. 4cm or 6cm and measure circumferences. The program calculates volume and surface area of the limb. In unilateral involvement, the program calculates edema volume and percentage of edema. Each segment is graphed on the measurement sheet to easily identify edematous areas. Hand volumes can also be documented in upper extremity involvement. The summary sheet charts progress as data is entered. You can name, save and recall records. Print copies for insurance documentation and referring physicians.
